Copyright infringement bill could bring the FBI to your intranet

A senator from Oregon has threatened to block a copyright enforcement bill that would give U.S. law enforcement the right to shut down Web sites without trial or defense if it finds the central reason for the site is to distribute copyrighted information illegally.

Ron Wyden, (D-Ore.) calls the Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act, or COICA bill the "wrong medicine" for copyright infringement, partially because it includes enforcement measures like a sledge hammer, when ice tongs are more appropriate.

Setting Up an Intranet - Intranet Server for Business

Intranet and typical website are alike in some cases, except one distinctive feature of intranet that gives full protection. While websites allow public access to any one online, only those with password permission are allowed to access intranet. Therefore, company intranet has become a great alternative and definite way to share information among employees, clients, and partners through the use of Internet.

To build an intranet for your company or home-based office, first of all, you will have to ...

The most delicious use of Enterprise 2.0 technology - Rob Gray

If you had to guess what my most viewed internal blog at Google is, I bet you think it's something like "latest innovations", "cool product launches", or "musings of Eric"... well I can tell you it's none of those...

You see, my most used internal blog is something that I use pretty much every day, I get delivered via RSS and email just in case I miss it, and I usually make a point of reading it before 11am. I even have a special label for the subscriptions in my gmail inbox. It's highly relevant to my location, and it actually gets printed out on a daily basis too. In fact I'd say this has the attention of most Googlers in London.

How many killer apps does your intranet have? - Dorthe Raakjær Jespersen

An intranet “killer app” is a service that drives staff members to the site, and keeps them coming back. Something so essential, that you can’t live without it in your daily work.

As such, they can have a positive effect on the rest of the intranet. Even the killer intranet applications that are not directly business-focused can play a vital role in promoting the intranet to staff and stakeholders.

To identify your killer apps, you could do a simple exercise. Ask yourself, what would happen if the intranet was deleted.

How we increased feature news traffic by 53% - Luke Oatham

At the start of October we introduced the next step in our strategy to improve engagement with news stories on the intranet. A month later we are seeing a 53% increase in traffic.

News story pageviews comparing October (blue) to September (green)This increase in news story traffic started when we introduced a "Related stories" advert box, placed top-right of feature news pages. Nothing clever. It's a simple text box containing a bulleted list of links to past stories.  A maximum of 3 links, with some...

Is the Intranet Your Baby? Read On! (Part 2 of 3) | Intranet Connections Blog

The content that gets posted on your site can greatly affect users’ perceptions of the intranet and can also affect intranet buy-in. People consume information online differently than they do in print so it is important to keep the following points in mind when developing content for your intranet:

Just getting stuff done on the intranet - Wedge

Too many intranet pages try to persuade, educate and, sometimes, lecture the reader when all the reader wants to do is get stuff done. And fast. Information might be the lifeblood of your company and your intranet, but acting on that information is where the benefits arise.

If you have drop-down menus, are they focussed on departments and teams, or are they focused on helping people with their work? In either case, a simple menu that helps people achieve common tasks may well be what’s needed.

Jargon test your intranet - Catherine Grenfell

Jargon is generally language that applies to a particular trade, profession or group of people. Within organisations jargon can be like secret shorthand, with many variations, including abbreviations, made-up words and acronyms. Who has ever been on a Genesis project or had to go to a meeting in the CQ building?

The intranet can suffer and benefit from this collective organisational shorthand. Good intranet teams need to ensure any jargon used on top level pages such as home page and landing pages is appropriate.

For example, ‘Richard’s blog’ might be highly appropriate when it is owned by the CEO, often referred to and covered during induction training. On the other hand, ‘OSKA’ might be used as the name of the online training system based on the software used, and have no real relevance at all to staff.

Find out what customers really care about: Gerry McGovern

It started with a card sorting study of a tourism website. On individual cards were tasks such as accommodation, vacation packages, planning a trip, top attractions, special offers, etc.

In workshops, I would go through a time-consuming process of getting people to put these cards into groups with the objective of helping this website design a more intuitive navigation. But the exercise was cumbersome and it was often hard to see clear results coming out of it.

Intranet diary: Shelf-stackers in the intranet supermarket

The job of the shelf-stacker is to fill the intranet shelves with junk. It's a fairly easy job. They don't have to think too much. It's not difficult to shove something on a shelf. They might stack it next to something similar, but it's not so important to them where it goes. Some of the shelf-stackers don't stack items with the labels facing the right way. As long as it's on a shelf.

They're not bothered whether a customer takes an item off a shelf, has a little look, or not. They don't mind if something has been sitting on a shelf for months and is out of date. That's not their job. Sales figures don't interest them. Top sellers? Supply and demand? Nah. In fact, most of the time, they don't even bother looking at what it is that they put up on the shelves. Someone gives them something to stack, and off they go. Job done. Box ticked.

How to increase your intranet user satisfaction - Martin Risgaard

When I hear about corporate intranets and how they are perceived by the users, it is clear that some do really well while some struggle. Most are somewhat successful and gradually improving which is good.

I recently conducted an intranet survey in my company and much to my surprise our intranet was perceived as both ’useful’ and ’important’ while the overall satisfaction was below average. Why was that?

I looked through the survey results and it made me think that we had to re-focus. Our challenges were not that people didn’t use it – they did, but seemingly in spite.

Intranets Done Right

I've been telling colleagues for years what's wrong with today's corporate intranets. Usually, they were shocked about my point of view: Write access for everyone! How, hell, could this fit with a corporate environment?

Wikis = Chaos!! Oh?

Typically, the first reaction to my call for égalité was, "We don't want Wikis, Wikis are chaos!" (Okay, you're a centralized person, and you don't know how to run a Wiki project. Acknowledged, thank you.) Of course, Wikis are fundamentally different to websites...

Intranet diary: Evolution of an information architect

Last weekend I went to Bletchley Park, the home of the code-breakers and Top Secret government facility during WW2. The tour included a visit to the National Museum of Computing, which evoked some old memories. Since returning from the trip I've been reminiscing about the world of computers and information when I was a kid and what it's like for me now. Old photo of Bletchley Park

I consider myself blessed to have gone to a school where I could take Computer Studies as an O Level. I remember our...

Why focus groups don't work: Gerry McGovern

The biggest problem in getting to know our customers is that they don't know themselves.

Years ago, British Airways (BA) decided to introduce a new service for its first class passengers on long haul flights. It was basically a mini fridge full of goodies so that if you woke up in the middle of the night feeling a little hungry, you could get something nice for yourself. The question was: What do we put into this little fridge?

BA dutifully did its market research and assembled several focus groups of first and business class passengers. What would you like, they asked? The response was universal. People wanted fruit or perhaps some light salads. All very good. All very healthy.
