Janus Boye’s recent blog post told readers how Arla Foods, a Danish dairy company, took their first step to make their intranet social by adding a thumbs up, thumbs down rating system on company news.  Almost instantly, the new rating system made their intranet more collaborative and opened them up to the possibility of adding more social tools that will benefit their organization. 10 things that make an intranet social and critical - Socialwrks

Despite all the talk and the fact many organisations understand that the locked down intranet (1.0) of old wont do, I thought there is still much debate about what its new iteration (the social intranet) is and why it is important.

So I thought I would try and collect some answers, if only for my own purposes of clarity. In essence this is a distillation of my experiences and these are my views although I did get several insights from a really excellent conversation held on the topic via Twitter which did provide lots of food for thought (see my favourite tweet further down).

I would love to hear your thoughts in a comment :)

Beware the social media agency con

Social media agencies promise the world but do they actually deliver? ‘Get return on investment from your social media’ and ‘we offer advice about the most suitable social media tools and technologies for your business’. Just a couple of website claims.

Malcolm Davison, of writingfortheweb.co.uk, explains that a social media consultancy needs an intimate knowledge of the relevant internal and external channels for the industry/sector/location concerned.

Why Adoption Rates Are Low and How to Fix It

Intranet social media can be one of the most powerful tools for internal communication. Unfortunately, the adoption rate of social media within corporations is dismally low.

Long story short, employees simply rarely take up internal social media. In fact, 72% of employees use intranet social media networks less than once a month. In comparison, most will use Facebook several times a day.

Why is that?

Who Owns the Intranet? - Joel's SharePoint Land

In a world of Intranet turf battles, the easy answer is… well, uh… IT, HR, Corp Communication, Marketing, and so on, but in this social world isn't it really the end user should own its destiny?

I reference an article from 2001 "Our intranet doesn't need an owner. It belongs to all of us -- and to none of us.

Fortunately, that freewheeling approach is picking up surprising support from managers, consultants, and intranet users." Amazing that 11 years later, we are still trying to move in that direction.

Social Business would dictate that it isn't owned by any department if the platform is governed and setup properly.

The personalization and needs of all should be surfaced in a way that it serves the user. Join in the poll. I've created a poll to see who you think owns the Intranet. I'll replace your results with this best guess.

Why social collaboration is important for your intranet, by Joshua David

“Over the past couple of years intranets have gone through a number of wonderful evolutions – everything from providing on-demand tools to creating more personalized experiences for their employees. And today with the rise of mobile devices and social media, many are looking to intranets for a way to take a more active role in the conversations going on in the company.

This can be accomplished by integrating social strategies into your existing intranet framework, and promoting social collaboration...

Could this be the start of a social intranet? (Intranet diary)

It's 5 o'clock on Friday afternoon, the day after our office Christmas party and I'm very much looking forward to going home. Just as I'm packing my things away I'm approached by one of the comms team...

"The Director General is going on the road next week and wants to be able to tweet what she's doing and display it on the intranet," he demands.

"I want to go home and if she waits another few months for our Twitter policy to be approved then perhaps I can do something," I think to myself.

Lackluster social intranet? 3 things you're (probably) not doing

For years, employees have been subjected to the "Godspeed" method of their employers introducing new communication technologies to the workplace. Here's how it works:

The IT department configures the new technology, subjecting it to rigorous testing to ensure that the bits get to where they're supposed to go and that the tool works they way it's supposed to without interfering with other systems. Once they're sure the technology works right, they issue the following instructions to the workforce: "Godspeed."

Stopping knowledge leaving with the person - Mark Morrell

It is a common problem as I know from personal experience. An organisation will closely track all the physical assets that you hold – computer, phone, car, etc, – and want them returned before you leave.

But your digital assets and your intellectual assets are rarely managed so the knowledge about how your work is carried out – processes, priorities, etc. – and the right contacts are lost to your successor (if your replacement has not been recruited), your manager and other people you work with.
