Don’t let the designer down

When Malcolm Davison of writingfortheweb.co.uk judges websites and intranets there are occasions when he finds that the design of a website is being let down by the standard of the written content. It can help if the designer can recognise good writing and take steps to rectify the situation. Check out Malcolm's latest blog.

Intranet redesign: Judge Group says Fat is where it is at - J. Boye

No this isn’t about obesity, it is about a key aspect to the Judge Group’s intranet redesign.  At a recent J. Boye Boston Intranet group meeting Dan Lewis, Intranet Manager for the Judge Group, spoke about his intranet redesign.  Dan chose a “search first” design approach but he knew some users would need navigation aides to get to content.  The question was how to handle navigation. Dan didn’t want a cluttered page with navigation, so he used a concept called “fat footer”:

Give your intranet a life of its own « Interact Intranet is Intelligent Intranet Software

Your intranet is an evolving hub of information that should take on a life of its own. One of the most effective ways to do this is to take time to explore all of the possibilities available with your intranet design and your intranet design and your intranet’s name.

Your intranet solution should sustain your organisations identity but it should be different to your corporate website. A separate identity is crucial for user adoption and so that employees recognise this is a tool specifically for them....

Intranet Management: Shaping the Internal Customer Experience - Martin White (@intranetfocus)

Good intranet managers are able to slice and dice their customers in many ways. Thanks to all the work they have done with personas, they may even have pictures of them up on the wall of their office, or more likely, desk divider. Each day they will be worrying about the user experience of these customers, and it’s difficult to tell them that their customers are actually not that concerned by the user experience.

These customers are captive and clever. They come to work each day knowing every twist and turn of the corporate intranet, together with a list of quick dial numbers they can use when they need information urgently and cannot find it. Even if they are performing multiple tasks and multiple roles I suspect that these customers will only be using a small percentage, may be only 0.5%, of the pages on the intranet. Don’t be too depressed — that is still a lot of pages in most companies.

Is Your Intranet Legal? - Martin White (@intranetfocus)

There are a number of legal issues that intranet managers need to be aware of, and some apply to websites and any application with a web browser even if it is not an intranet.

Let me start by saying that I am not a lawyer and I guess you are not one either, so the information and advice I have set out below needs to be verified with the legal team in your organization.

In this column I am only addressing accessibility issues and the use of photographs on intranets.

There are many other issues!

Why are intranets so ugly? - Ken Barnett

I believe there are several reasons why intranets do not look as clean and polished as business to consumer (B-to-C) websites.

First off they are thought of as behind the scenes. Since only employees are viewing your intranet it’s not as important that it has the slick look and feel that a commercial site has.

Second, the CMS that the intranet is built on is typically not easy to design for. It’s chosen and utilized primarily for it’s functionality and not it’s looks.

How confidential is an intranet design?

When I was developing snack products,  I was never allowed to talk about my work with people outside my company. Others might copy our ideas! But in intranets, things are really different! That is because only the content can be confidential, but not the design, navigation etc.
