Mental Models (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)

What users believe they know about a UI strongly impacts how they use it. Mismatched mental models are common, especially with designs that try something new.

Mental models are one of the most important concepts in human–computer interaction (HCI). Indeed, we spend a good deal of time covering their design implications in our full-day seminar on Principles of Interface Design.

Here, I'll report a few examples from our usability studies. Not coincidentally, using concrete examples often helps people understand abstract concepts (such as mental models).

First, though, you have to suffer one bit of theory — namely the definition of mental models. A mental model is what the user believes about the system at hand.

Why is it that usability professionals don’t like indexes but users do? - IBF

A – Z indexes seem to be a hot topic at the moment with experts like Jakob Nielsen stating ‘Alphabetical Sorting Must Die’. See his article posted last week at http://www.useit.com/alertbox/alpha-sorting.html

The A – Z gets a bad press as it is perceived as a sign of poor information architecture and experts suggest investment would be better placed in fixing why users can’t find things on your site, rather than copping out and creating an index.

However, in an imperfect world where intranet users are disillusioned with search and navigation structure is not always user focused, the A-Z index is currently proving useful. As our recent research paper outlines, IBF member scores in user testing for efficiency and effectiveness are improving where users also have access to a well thought out index.

The ‘I need to…’ menu: simple and invaluable - Daniel Keegan

One of the intranets that we maintain has an immense products section, upon which material relating to a broad product portfolio is available at all times, and constantly growing!

As part of the organisation’s internal communications strategy, a few of the products are given the spotlight on the intranet at any given time, for instance when a product launch or rebrand is looming. The aim here is that the audience can access details on those products simply and easily, preferably with just one click.

Intranet redesign, Phase 4: visual design, HTML and CMS build - Luke Oatham

Building a working interface from the wireframes and visual prototype.

News delivery design With several stakeholders interested in news delivery across the intranet, this was an important part of the redesign.

In the existing intranet, a news story would appear on the homepage with a URL from the latest news section and then drop into an archive, with a different URL.

So the same story had 2 different URLs in its lifetime travelling from homepage to archive. A nightmare for analytics and evaluation and back-linking.

The news archive itself was just a bulleted list of text headlines, grouped by month, buried in a structure that was difficult to navigate and, to my mind, did not encourage anyone to browse through back-issues (implemented with cookies).

Should intranet links open in a new window? - James Robertson

It is often the small things that are the most contentious in a community. As a vigorous debate on the LinkedIn ‘Intranet Professionals’ group showed, "should links open in a new window?" is one such topic.

While these discussions echo the policies established for public-facing websites, intranets may require very different approaches.

Many possibilities

There are a wide range of policies that could be put in place:

  • all links open in the same window (no new windows)
  • links to public (external) sites open in new windows (or new tabs)
  • links to systems or applications open in new windows
  • links to documents or other non-web content open in new windows
  • any link that takes the user away from the current task open in new windows
  • links to other internal ‘intranet sites’ open in new windows

How to measure the effectiveness of web content - Rian Van Der Merwe

Content strategy is starting to get its much-deserved time in the spotlight as part of the user experience design family. As basic examples of confusing/bizarre content like this one and this one show, getting serious about content is way overdue. But I’m a little worried that we haven’t seen much talk on how to measure the effectiveness of web content. It is unfortunate that in some companies it is still a struggle to sell the benefits of UX design, but it is the reality, so we have to deal with it.

Selling content strategy to clients and stakeholders is, of course, not the only reason why measuring its effectiveness is important. It is also essential as part of the whole design process

Want to Improve E2.0 Adoption? Get Serious about Basic Usability - John Brunswick

AEP Now Concept Design - Joshua David

As I have said in the past, we use a very iterative approach to our design work here at AEP. And leading up to the launch of our redesigned intranet (scheduled to launch on October 1), I thought it would be interesting to have a glimpse at some of the concepts that led us to the final creative.

These are sketches; loose-knit ideas that show a visual evolution in our design and design thinking. There were dozens of different constraints we were working with and it took us some time to devise a solution that not only moved the brand forward but also (and more importantly) supported the needs and desires of our audience, the 20,000 employees of AEP.

Should You Copy a Famous Site's Design? - Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox

Although successful websites typically have high usability, average sites can hurt their business by copying design elements that don't work well in other contexts.

When faced with a design quandary, bosses are often inclined to say, "why don't we just copy X?" where X is some high-profile, successful website. There's something to be said for this strategy; presumably, Site X is doing something right, since they're so big and famous...

Discussing the length of the intranet homepage » Column Two, James Robertson

Some while back I posted an article which asked the question: how long should the intranet homepage be? I then discused what attractive intranets look like, providing examples of modern designs, including some long homepages. This generated some discussion and debate. Most recently, it has led Toby Ward to write some passionate posts about...

Employees demand a clean intranet home page, no scrolling - Toby Ward

Your employees demand a clean, white home page, with absolutely no scrolling. This is a fact, supported by dozens of employee focus groups, at dozens of leading, and medium size organizations in North America.

I’ve heard the argument too many times, by too many pundits and design and usability experts, that there is nothing wrong with a scrolling home page. Among the many intranet design fallacies:

  • Information scent is too important.
  • It is always better to provide more information than less information.
  • If employees want more information, then a little scrolling is a good option to have.
  • Most websites have scrolling home pages, and are very successful.
  • A newspaper has a fold, the intranet home page can have one too.

What attractive intranets look like - James Robertson

The winds of change are blowing for intranets. Every intranet survey run in the wider community has shown that 50% of intranet teams are planning (or hoping) to redesign their sites.

With any redesign comes the opportunity for a fresh new look and feel. Drawing their inspiration from the best of public-facing sites, intranets are shrugging off their dated appearance and joining the modern age.

These design improvements matter. As discussed in the earlier article Should the intranet look sexy?, intranet sites don’t have a marketing role, but they do need to have a professional and engaging appearance......

Top level intranet navigation – your menu names - kilobox communiqué

I’m overseeing the design of our new intranet, and the ‘look n feel’, structure and navigation are crucial to my mind in helping people adopt the new system. I’d like to tell you the old menu names we’re dumping, and the new ones we’re using for our top level navigation.

I’m also able to share the top level menus from several other intranets thanks to the generous nature of my Twitter friends who shared their navigation terminology with me. I trust that none of us are giving away sensitive company information. By their very nature, intranets can seem ‘secret’. While we can all see what goes on with other people’s customer facing websites, we don’t often know what goes on inside other companies of course.

How long should the intranet homepage be? - Step Two Designs, James Robertson

Intranet homepages are always contentious. In most organisations, every stakeholder would like a piece of this valuable real estate, and debates rage around the overall purpose and design.

Within the intranet industry, the homepage also inflames passionate debate. This is particularly true on the question of how long the intranet homepage should be.

In the earlier article Seven roles of the intranet homepage, a range of purposes were identified:

  1. news
  2. navigation
  3. key tools
  4. key information
  5. community and culture
  6. internal marketing
  7. collaboration

Effective designs find a productive balance between these seven roles, without any one being excessively dominant.

The need for speed on the Web: Gerry McGovern

Customers crave speed on the Web, and they reward organizations that make things fast and simple.

Why is Google successful? Because it delivers better and faster results than its competitors. Google truly understands the customer's need for speed. "At Google, we've gathered hard data to reinforce our intuition that "speed matters" on the Internet," Jake Brutlag of Google wrote in 2009. "We've always viewed speed as a competitive advantage."

"We may be the only people in the world who can say our goal is to have people leave our homepage as quickly as possible," Google states.

Seeking a better design for intranet news » Column Two, James Robertson

The design of intranets has been in the forefront of my thinking recently. I’ve been writing hard on our next book, which is specifically on intranet design (180 pages done, just three chapters to go!). This week’s Intranet Leadership Forum workshop in Melbourne also had a session on the design of the intranet homepage (always contentious!).

Working through our collection of intranet screenshots, I’m struck by how pedestrian many intranet homepages are. Despite huge advances in technology, and our growing knowledge as intranet professionals, little has changed on most homepages.
