Connecting Employees to Social Media: New Possibilities - Dion Hinchcliffe

Social media policy is usually not perceived as an exciting topic, yet at this stage of the industry nothing could be further from the truth.

It should now be considered a primary enabler as enterprises develop — or update — their social business strategies. Because of this perception, one of the more powerful and transformative tools in the social business arsenal will be left to languish unmodernized by many, making the organization do too much work, assume too much downside, and ignore important upsides.

Get Creative. Build on Culture. Empower Employees with Intranet Connections v11 | Intranet Connections Blog

Intranet Connections has its roots in business applications. We have added a lot of social and collaboration elements to our social intranet software over the recent years, but we have never forgotten about our roots in providing tools for employees to help improve your business.  We also see a great deal of employee engagement stemming from your company culture and our new v11 is all about leveraging your intranet to communicate that culture, and to expand on the tools you need to better inform and coll...

Is Employee Engagement a Sisyphean Effort?

Almost every company these days wants to create a program, a process, an intervention or an initiative that creates employee engagement.

It starts with the company paying someone for a “scientifically designed and vetted” survey instrument that gives management a “score” that can be influenced. The score, usually somewhere between 1 and 5, or 1 and 10 – or even 1 and 100 – tells management where on a finite engagement continuum their employees sit.

Obviously, when given a scale of engagement, human nature kicks in and you want to get to the highest score (whether that be 5, 10, or 100.) Management has its eye on the prize – total employee engagement (so we’ve got that going for us.)

Ring the bell, drop the balloons and confetti and pat each other on the back. You’ve arrived.

Let me ask this stupid question though...

Three ages of internal research - Liam FitzPatrick

Last week we held a small seminar at the office looking at how employee research is evolving. My colleagues from our research division came along and we talked about three ages of employee research and how it matches the evolving approach organisations have to where their employees add value.

The first age of employee research was the Personnel Age when all that ever happened was the fairly flat employee survey.  You know the sort of thing… do you like your job? Are you happy with your pay?  Have ...

Employee Profiles: It’s not Just the ‘What’ You Are, but the ‘Who’ - Michael Gotta

When organizations discuss the business value of social networking, the conversation invariably includes a discussion on employee profiles.

Strategists, sponsors, champions, and management teams often (not always but frequently) make the assumption that employees will create and maintain their own profiles. These profiles will include rich information not captured elsewhere in corporate systems. Rich employee profile data that is broadly accessible by co-workers will enable the organization to improve its ability to locate experts, discovery new sources of talent, connect people across the globe working on similar business activities, and enable better community-building.

While these benefits are all possible, I consistently find that profiles are a common adoption hurdle faced by project teams across virtually all industry sectors.

Twitter IS internal communications - Robin Farr

A few weeks ago, I played the latest Twitter game: find your Twitter BFFs. (For anyone not familiar with this particular trick, Twitter BFFs "tells you who you interact with most on Twitter... calculated based on the number of times you @-reply them in your tweets" as it's described on the site.)

I occasionally do these things, if only for fun, but rarely tweet the results because I figure no one cares. In this case I did share my Twitter BFFs with my "tweeps" because the results were interesting: All except for one were co-workers. (And the one is a former co-worker and my boss's wife, so I figure she almost counts as a co-worker.)

My first reaction to the fact that most of my interactions were with colleagues was, "Huh. Interesting." But I've been pondering it since. You see, I think this is indicative of something, especially given that several of those same people tweeted their own BFFs and the lists were similar.

2 Emerging Themes in the Changing Workplace - Trish

I love to watch themes emerge. As I reflect back on my experience at the HR Technology conference, two themes seemed to be recurrent in almost every session I attended and in many of the conversations I participated in. From the opening keynote with Tamara Erickson, the social learning session, the blogger insight panel, and the closing keynote with Mark Effron, the messages were:

  • Treat employees like adults
  • Simplify

Today, Web 2.0 technologies are radically changing how we interact and make decisions in the workplace. It’s changing the way we innovate by improving the way we generate, capture, and share knowledge with colleagues. And, although personal use of technology seems to be where the most growth is occurring, we will begin to see use in the workplace more and more.

How HR can leverage the intranet - Stephen Byrne

Because it is a department connected to every part of an organisation, Human Resources (HR) has a unique position that can be leveraged to help underpin the intranet’s value to staff.

HR remains a key stakeholder of, and publisher to, the corporate intranet. Reviewing the various content and tasks available can help HR and intranet teams evaluate their current site and stimulate ideas for more compelling offerings.

  • Informing and supporting staff
  • Connecting staff
  • Developing staff

Intranet Design 101 « Intranet Connections Blog

These days your intranet users are employees who are active with Facebook, YouTube, iTunes and their smart phones. They are more sophisticated and savvy. This doesn’t mean you need to rush out and pay big bucks for an iTunes app on the intranet, but you should be taking a close look at how your intranet provides value to employees. It’s not all about the design, but a few key considerations can go a long way in maximizing the use of your intranet site.

Bas Zurburg.com | The intranet: a happiness station

The intranet does not have to be fun to make employees happy

This is another article in which I try to create adoption and acceptance for the intranet in the organisation. I will take another angle and look at what motivates employees and what role the intranet can play to create happy employees. I believe we all agree that organisations need happy employees to be successful.

It is another way of identifying good content for the intranet.

How employees are motivated:

  • Money - simply put: employees expect a fair financial compensation for their effort
  • Creativity - We are all unique human beings and we all want to put our personality and ideas into our work
  • Recognition - A shoulder tap is in many situations more worth than a financial raise / bonus
  • Future - is the job secure, what are the options to grow in the organisation

Let's apply these to the intranet...

How to tell when Enterprise 2.0 is not appropriate for your organisation

As Enterprise 2.0 activists, we keep on trying to sell Enterprise 2.0 as the ideal solution for your organisation. But to be completely honest, depending on your company objectives, values and culture it may just not work.

10 principles your company may have adopted that will make Enterprise 2.0 implementation counter productive

  • Your company is not comfortable with innovation
  • It is business critical to foster politics
  • Strong managers are pivotal in the organisation
  • The IT department defines the organisation

Top 3 Pluses & Minuses Of Enterprise 2.0 - Wolfe's Den Blog

Getting ready for the Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston, June 14- 17, I've been thinking about the value of the online collaboration tools most of us are beginning to embrace. My early take is that the positives are engagement, empowerment, and the potential to spur innovation. The downsides are the dangers of groupthink gone wild and the security risks of exposing valuable company data.

Here are my Enteprise 2.0 minuses

  • Security, security, security
  • Collaboration as a time-waster
  • Enterprise 2.0 as false collaboration

Now for the positives

  • Breaking through the org chart
  • Better business responsiveness
  • Empowerment and engagement

Time is (still) money: Time for intranet leadership employee productivity (Part 2): Gerry McGovern

Time is (still) money: Time for intranet leadership (Part 2)

By Gerry McGovern

Managers need to focus on making things easy to do. If it's not easy, it often doesn't get done.

A couple of years ago I met a manager who had been specifically appointed by the CEO to improve employee morale. I gave him data that showed that his intranet had the lowest employee satisfaction ratings we had found so far. Tasks were really hard to complete.

The secret second reason why your intranet news goes unread | kilobox communiqué

We know the number one reason people find your intranet superfluous to requirements; irrelevant information. The ‘news’ stories are often Company focussed (what ‘we’ need to tell ‘you’, the little people) rather than ‘people focussed’ (what ‘you’ need to know to get stuff done).

We know that if an intranet, or the content, ain’t useful then it ain’t used! But what about the secret, number two, insidious reason?

Time is (still) money: increasing employee productivity (Part 1): Gerry McGovern

Time is (still) money: increasing employee productivity (Part 1)

By Gerry McGovern

Most organizations are only operating at 60 percent efficiency even though they may have the most cutting edge information technology available.

I was at a conference recently where a speaker asked an audience of some 600 intranet professionals to raise their hands if their organizations used SAP. About 60 percent of the audience put their hands up. Then the speaker asked the audience: "How many of you like us...

User approach, processes and ambient metrics differentiate Enterprise 2.0 strategies

The enterprise band wagon is getting big. In fact, it's more like the Enterprise 2.0 barge now. Most enterprise software that is new or has been updated in the last several years tries to lay claim to some E20 credibility. Whether in its SOA-ness, SLATES conformity, or simply its addition of some rounded corners, reflections and drop shadows, they all seem to have some E20 in there. Asking "Is it E20?" is almost like asking, "Will it blend?" The answer is always, "YES." So where is the uniqueness that sets E20 systems and strategies apart?

The answer to these questions, I believe, can be found in some emerging Enterprise 2.0 trends. The rash of recent conferences (Gilbane, Collaborate 2010, AIIM and the Web 2.0 Expo), analyst reports and punditry converge on three important trends in Enterprise 2.0:

  • Users first (after all there is no E20 without them)
  • Process importance (because this is where "real" work gets done)
  • Ambient metrics (because this predicts what really matters)

This is part three in a multi-part series on how Océ is implementing Enterprise 2.0 within their organization. Part one covered the business drivers of Enterprise 2.0, and part two covered making the push for Enterprise 2.0

Océ was faced with how to deal with the current company culture. Traditionally, employees were not encouraged to ask questions or be open about personal doubts and ideas.

Today I will cover how Océ dealt with change management issues.

Intranets: That Giant Sucking Sound

Intranets are places where someone - usually a customer, partner, or employee - signs in and then tries to do something.

Given my own experience as the user of intranets, and as someone who rebuilds broken intranets, here's my take on the current state of intranets.

Intranets, on the whole, are TERRIBLE.

Being an enterprise linchpin - Enterprise 2.0

Recently, I read the new business book by Seth Godin, Linchpin: Are you indispensible? which is a must-have for any modern person’s bookshelf. The major premise of the book is that there are no more great jobs that pay well where someone tells you what to do.

Let me repeat that, because jobs where someone tells you exactly what to do have been a stable of hierarchical organizations for a long time now. There are no more great jobs where someone tells you what to do.

The reason is that every job simple enough for a manager to tell their employees exactly what to do can be outsourced or automated, eventually. Even if you currently have a well-paying job where someone tells you what to do all day, how long will it last?
