5 Ways to Engage Employees with Your Intranet - Christopher Swan

The company intranet is kind of like the middle child in a family. We care about it, but its siblings usually get more attention. In this scenario, the siblings are external websites and social media channels. Websites always seem to get the makeover and the budget allocations when push comes to shove. Since social media is the last born, it’s the pride and joy of the company and leaders are focusing on this fun and energizing medium.

What many companies and leaders do not understand is that the intranet connects employees with the company and is an important engagement tool. Engagement equals happy employees, less turnover, increased innovation and savings on the bottom line. These things matter.

How do I engage employees and improve collaboration? « Mark Morrell intranet pioneer

It’s the type of question I am hearing more frequently. It’s being asked by intranet people, CIOs, senior business operations managers and even a few CEOs.  It’s important that it is answered clearly and fully. The alternative of ignoring it is to risk a repeat of what happened to knowledge management in the late 1990s when it was ‘the thing’ to talk about and be seen to be doing but sadly, in many cases, never able to meet its full potential helping businesses.

I don’t claim to know all the answers and there is more than one way to address this question. In fact it is a deeper and complex subject which needs covering for this question to be answered fully.

7 ways to engage people in a digital workplace « Mark Morrell

In my last three posts on the digital workplace I have covered ‘Must have digital workplace principles’ then focused on the first principle ‘5 steps to a great digital workplace strategy’ and lastly ‘Create a brilliant digital workplace with me’. To have a successful digital workplace (my definition is ‘work is what you do, not where you go to’) organisations must have the right strategy, culture, environment and infrastructure to exploit the benefits fully. It needs to become the natural way of working...

Creating a Social Intranet where Employees can Learn, Plan and Do

Introducing the Social Intranet

Social media has generated a flurry of organizational buzzwords and catch phrases — collaboration, enterprise 2.0, knowledge share, cloud computing, community, online reputation, social CRM, crowd sourcing… and the list goes on and on.

One of the phrases that you hear more and more frequently is actually one that has been around for quite some time: employee engagement. (And one that is very near and dear to my heart.) With this renewed focus on engagement, organizations are now assessing how they can leverage social technologies to engage their most important audience, employees.

Three ages of internal research - Liam FitzPatrick

Last week we held a small seminar at the office looking at how employee research is evolving. My colleagues from our research division came along and we talked about three ages of employee research and how it matches the evolving approach organisations have to where their employees add value.

The first age of employee research was the Personnel Age when all that ever happened was the fairly flat employee survey.  You know the sort of thing… do you like your job? Are you happy with your pay?  Have ...

E-Mail and Intranet Top Communication Methods to Engage Employees

The most common communication vehicles organizations use to engage employees and foster productivity are e-mail (83 percent) and an organization’s intranet (75 percent).

Those are a couple of the findings in a new survey released by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Research Foundation and Buck Consultants, A Xerox Company. The survey also found nearly half of employers currently communicate through Facebook, instant messaging, and Twitter.

Heineken brews strong employee engagement - Kelly Kass

How do you connect 75,000 employees working in 140 breweries in more than 70 countries and instill a sense of pride in the organization? Through sport, of course.

That’s exactly what Heineken did. After a survey revealed that employees didn’t have enough knowledge of the brand’s sponsorship, the Internal Communications and Heineken Brand Team joined together to launch the Heineken Internal Table Football Competition (HitFC) – a campaign that recently won the European Sponsorship Award for best employee program.

Employee engagement: are more firms listening to their staff, or are they just paying lip service? - The Observer

The economic slump has put a severe strain on the relationship between companies and their employees. Staff are enduring pay freezes and job cuts, while in many cases bonuses still roll in at the top, fuelling resentment.

Yet against this background, large companies claim that they are doing more than ever before to listen to their staff and improve relationships. "Employee engagement" – the jargon for firms' efforts to communicate and build good relations with their workforces – is a hot topic in management circles. Since 2006, companies have had a legal duty to "have regard to the interests of employees" and to report on their interactions with staff each year in their accounts.

Internal Communications & Trust - Gene Marbach

According to Deloitte’s fourth annual Ethics & Workplace Survey, one-third (34 percent) of employed Americans plan to look for a new job when the economy gets better. Within this group of respondents, 48 percent cite loss of trust in their employer and 46 percent say lack of transparent communication from their company’s leadership are the primary reasons for pursuing new employment at the end of the recession.

Additionally, a large majority (65 percent) of Fortune 1000 executives who are concerned employees will be job hunting in the coming months believe trust will be a factor in a potential increase in voluntary turnover.

Bas Zurburg.com | The intranet: a happiness station

The intranet does not have to be fun to make employees happy

This is another article in which I try to create adoption and acceptance for the intranet in the organisation. I will take another angle and look at what motivates employees and what role the intranet can play to create happy employees. I believe we all agree that organisations need happy employees to be successful.

It is another way of identifying good content for the intranet.

How employees are motivated:

  • Money - simply put: employees expect a fair financial compensation for their effort
  • Creativity - We are all unique human beings and we all want to put our personality and ideas into our work
  • Recognition - A shoulder tap is in many situations more worth than a financial raise / bonus
  • Future - is the job secure, what are the options to grow in the organisation

Let's apply these to the intranet...

How to Reward and Recognize Employees in E2.0? - by Bert Sandie

As we roll-out and gain maturity with Enterprise 2.0 (E2.0) in our workplaces there is a desire to reward and recognize employees who best exemplify the desired behaviors and actions in using the solutions effectively to help achieve business needs.

There is a great opportunity that exists to reward and recognize employees for their contributions and participation. My advice is that each company needs to carefully examine their corporate culture, values and existing recognition/reward programs to better understand what makes sense for their company with regards to E2.0.

Social Media, Engagement, and Success

Is your work's intranet similar to Facebook or Twitter?

A recent study by Gallup discovered that companies in the top quartile in terms of engaged employees outperformed those companies in the bottom quartile by a business growth rate of about 4 to 1.

The Gallup study provides graphs and data analyses in this report which proves that engagement is an important factor in the growth of a business. But how does an organization create engagement in the first place? One of the best and easiest ways to do this is by using social media tools inside the workplace.

A recent study by Ga...

Increase Your User Activity with Points, Badges and Status

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article about strategies for engaging your visitors. In it, I expanded on four different techniques to keep visitors to your website engaged and active. One of the strategies was using virtual rewards and status — also known as game mechanics (or funware) — to increase website engagement.

Websites and applications like FourSquare, StackOverflow and Farmville all use game mechanics to attract and retain users. Even not-so-obvious websites like eBay and Yelp! have aspects of game mechanics baked in to the functionality.

Architecting Participation with Enterprise Social Media

Employee engagement can't be forced and in most cases, the experts say, it just can't be expected.

Here are a few lessons learned by the intranet managers of British Telecom, KPN and MARS.

Each company is seeking to raise engagement levels of between 40,000 and 140,000 employees — it's no simple task.

Employee portals: Making their jobs easier = increased productivity

A lot of companies we work with are using their intranets to leverage their corporate brand and communicate their culture. After a couple years of being numbers focused, leadership is recognizing that engagement plays a key role in future success.

So, if you’re giving your intranet a tune-up to align it – and employees – with the company’s vision, then consider the following:

  • What content will be on the site?
  • You don’t want to bog employees down with another task.
  • Your first shot has got to be your best shot.
  • Recognition should be a part of it.
  • It’s all about engagement/teamwork.

6 Fundamentals of Effective Collaboration

In my last post, I framed a definition of collaboration, but it left many questions unanswered. For example, what would effective collaboration look like?

Here are my secret sauce ingredients. I see these as key factors for driving effective collaboration:

Engagement. To me, it starts with listening, being in the moment. Active listening and engagement is necessary to establish rapport and trust.

How to use social media to enhance engagement

Social media has become such an exciting tool for enhancing corporate engagement in recent years. It lowers the barriers of communications immensely by promoting brainstorming, trust and networking opportunities throughout the organization.

It gives employees that essential feeling of belonging to a community.  But as any shop teacher will tell you, tools are great. Just make sure you how to use them — otherwi...

For successful employee engagement in your intranet | The blog of Christophe Bruchansky

Massive corporations will always be more opaque for their employees than smaller ones. Working in a small team, you can take the time to learn your colleagues, speak with them about the projects, understand the motivations behind every decision. It is impossible to do the same in a company employing thousands of people. Most of large organisations understand this is a weakness, putting at risk employee engagement, creativity and consistency between departments. Tactics to mitigate these  risks are common...

Deleting your intranet - part one - Intranet Benchmarking Forum

There was a story not too long ago where a municipality in Denmark had lost it’s intranet. Somebody in IT managed to delete the entire intranet by accident and they couldn’t find a working backup copy. Talk about a bad day, right? Not really according to the public statement that was made after the incident. The responsible senior manager stated that the loss of the intranet will have absolutely no impact on the operations of the municipality, their citizens, or any other external related work.

Now, if that is indeed the case - why did they have an intranet in the first place?
