Email is far from dead

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced in November last year ‘that email is dead’. But there are no signs of the funeral just yet. Malcolm Davison managing director or writingfortheweb.co.uk compares the relative merits of social networking and email newsletter distribution for engaging and informing staff and customers.

Gamification of the Intranet - SharePoint Analyst

Intranet discussions have been dominated by the subject of social tools since 2009: Twitter and Facebook for the enterprise; increase rapid productivity with rapid connectivity; break down silos with social tools; capture implicit employee knowledge; build knowledge communities using social; etc. The list goes on.

However, I am not entirely convinced that social tools ala Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn (status updates, following colleagues, commenting, and news feeds) can provide measurable business value. I’ve heard colloquial accounts and give merit to the arguments that they help capture organizational knowledge, that they contribute to the organizational story and that they connect employees across boundaries (both physical and hierarchical). Still, I’m on the fence.

Private social networks playing Facebook role in more workplaces

From retail chains to electric utilities to manufacturers, a growing number of U.S. corporations are harnessing the power of social networks to modernize how their employees communicate with each other, business partners and customers -- making these firms more nimble in the marketplace and leaving their less Facebook-savvy rivals trailing.

In the last 18 months, hundreds of thousands of companies have signed up for private cloud-based social networking services such as Yammer, Chatter, Huddle and Jive -- all of which are modeled after Facebook.

How Facebook Messages Will Influence SharePoint - Rich Blank

Earlier this week Facebook announced a new capability called Facebook Messages -- their new email/SMS/chat functionality that doesn't care what technology you use to reach your friends. Mark Zuckerberg called it "next generation messaging" and described it as seamless, informal, immediate, personal, simple, minimal, and short.

Facebook as an Intranet Part 3: 10 More Reasons Not To Consider Facebook For Your Intranet Platform | Intranet Experience Blog

First, let me start off with a bit of a disclaimer. I’m not an anti-Facebook zealot and my goal isn’t to discourage the use of Facebook by companies and organizations. To the contrary, one of the biggest roles of my job is to explain how social media channels can be used effectively by organizations and within organizations. So, with that said, my goal with this series of posts is to educate anyone considering the use of Facebook as their corporate Intranet to seriously reconsider. Using Facebook for a corporate Intranet is like using a hammer to loosen a nut. It can be done, but there’s a lot of risk involved.

So, to help you understand why Facebook shouldn’t be considered when selecting the platform for your Intranet, here are 10 more reasons why it just doesn’t stack up to the competition out there.

  1. No integration with organizational LDAP
  2. No document sharing
  3. Search isn’t designed for Intranet purposes

Facebook As A Company Intranet Is A Nightmare Waiting To Happen - Sean R. Nicholson

Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about whether Facebook is a suitable platform for organizations to build a corporate intranet. The fact that most employees are already on Facebook, combined with the low pricepoint (aka Free) often leads fiscally-focused executives to make statements like “Why build an Intranet, we can just use Facebook.” To see some interesting opinions on the topic, I suggest you check out this thread on the WorldWide Intranet Challenge LinkedIn group.

If you have ever thought about building your organizational intranet on Facebook, I suggest you stop and take a moment to read the following...

To Block or Not to Block Facebook and Social Media in the Workplace

In Cisco's Mid-Year Security Report, the company cites research finding that 50% of end users admitted to accessing social media tools at work, in spite of company rules, at least once a week. Another 27% have changed the settings on a company device to access prohibited sites or applications.

The report notes the security risks, and potential for lost productivity, Facebook and other social media sites present, but doesn't recommend enterprises block social media sites entirely.

Making The Case for Enterprise Activity Streams (And Why It’s Not Just “Another Tool”)

Whenever people ask me about my job, I tell them what you’d probably expect: I work for a company that takes technologies with social dynamics that you enjoy on the consumer Web, like Facebook and Twitter, and adapt them to the way we work inside companies.

We need a more pragmatic approach that tackles the “why isn’t this just another tool?” question more substantively...
