Re-prioritise your intranet’s home page « Interact Intranet is Intelligent Intranet Software

Re-prioritise your intranet’s home page

Prime real estate, is how we describe the intranet’s home page, isn’t it? We’re careful what goes on it, although over the years perhaps it has bloated to include too many links and ‘must have’ widgets solely to satisfy stakeholders, rather than the audience.

So how often do you review your home page and assess its impact and value?

Corporate Intranets – A Global Disconnect? - Jacquelyn Vilet

Every company operating on a global basis is interested in having all their employees worldwide identify with the company Many companies use an “Intranet” web site for this purpose. But oftentimes, the design can be flawed, and even lead to disconnects with global employees. Do you think the design of your intranet makes employees worldwide truly identify with your company?

Let me set the stage: The intranet affects all employees in all countries, not just the headquarters location. Close your eyes and try to put yourself in your employees’ shoes. Next, go to your company’s intranet and see it through their eyes.

Discussing the length of the intranet homepage » Column Two, James Robertson

Some while back I posted an article which asked the question: how long should the intranet homepage be? I then discused what attractive intranets look like, providing examples of modern designs, including some long homepages. This generated some discussion and debate. Most recently, it has led Toby Ward to write some passionate posts about...

An A-Z of BT’s Intranet « Mark Morrell

In my last post ‘Great intranets help make efficient people’ I talked briefly about the BT A-Z.  BT Intranet users find this a very useful service helping them to quickly find a site. Research of people in BT finds they navigate to what they need from the BT Homepage by using the search engine, deep linking from the many headings grouped functionally or use the BT A-Z. People who use the BT A-Z have a reasonable idea they know the site exists and what its name could be.  Cross-referencing of sites help...

Employees demand a clean intranet home page, no scrolling - Toby Ward

Your employees demand a clean, white home page, with absolutely no scrolling. This is a fact, supported by dozens of employee focus groups, at dozens of leading, and medium size organizations in North America.

I’ve heard the argument too many times, by too many pundits and design and usability experts, that there is nothing wrong with a scrolling home page. Among the many intranet design fallacies:

  • Information scent is too important.
  • It is always better to provide more information than less information.
  • If employees want more information, then a little scrolling is a good option to have.
  • Most websites have scrolling home pages, and are very successful.
  • A newspaper has a fold, the intranet home page can have one too.

Great intranets help make efficient people « Mark Morrell

When I posted about the latest results for BT ‘BT Intranet 2010 benchmark results‘ I promised to give examples the Intranet Benchmarking Forum highlighted as global best practice.  The first three examples are:About our content: IBF said all pages across BT’s intranet contain author and date informationHow involving everyone can make your intranet more valuable to your organisation: IBF said BT’s intranet supports our values to be open and straightforward in dealings with colleaguesHow you integrate your...

For an Effective Intranet: Throw Out the Corporate Home Page - John Brunswick

Relevancy is value. In a world where projects are justified through ROI analysis it is odd that most of today's corporate intranet "Home Pages" consistently supply users with an exceptionally high noise to signal ratio.

Instead of acting as enablers, they pour an overwhelming maze of information onto users - with questionable relevancy. Does it really make sense to use a key touch point in the enterprise to bombard users with low relevancy global information?

How long should the intranet homepage be? - Step Two Designs, James Robertson

Intranet homepages are always contentious. In most organisations, every stakeholder would like a piece of this valuable real estate, and debates rage around the overall purpose and design.

Within the intranet industry, the homepage also inflames passionate debate. This is particularly true on the question of how long the intranet homepage should be.

In the earlier article Seven roles of the intranet homepage, a range of purposes were identified:

  1. news
  2. navigation
  3. key tools
  4. key information
  5. community and culture
  6. internal marketing
  7. collaboration

Effective designs find a productive balance between these seven roles, without any one being excessively dominant.

Seeking a better design for intranet news » Column Two, James Robertson

The design of intranets has been in the forefront of my thinking recently. I’ve been writing hard on our next book, which is specifically on intranet design (180 pages done, just three chapters to go!). This week’s Intranet Leadership Forum workshop in Melbourne also had a session on the design of the intranet homepage (always contentious!).

Working through our collection of intranet screenshots, I’m struck by how pedestrian many intranet homepages are. Despite huge advances in technology, and our growing knowledge as intranet professionals, little has changed on most homepages.

The decline of the homepage: Gerry McGovern

More and more customers are going straight to specific pages on your website, rather than the homepage.

The decline of the homepage In 2003, 39 percent of the page views for a large research website were for the homepage. By 2009, it was down to 19 percent. In one month in 2008, of the 70,000 page views a technology site received, 22,000 were for the homepage. For the same month in 2010, of the 120,000 page views the site received, only 2,500 were for the homepage.
