Google Intranet Looks Like - Amit Singh

What do around 16,000 Google employees stare at in the morning when they’ve arrived at the office? They might be looking at Moma, the name for the Google intranet.

The meaning of the name of “Moma” is a mystery even to some of the employees working on it, we heard, but Moma’s mission is prominently displayed on its footer: “OrganizeGoogle’s information and make it accessible and useful to Googlers.

A Googler, as you may know, is what Google employees call themselves (they have other nicknames for specific roles; a noogler is a new Google employee, a gaygler is a gay one, a xoogler is an ex-one, and so on).

BT puts return on investment value on social media for employees

It is difficult to measure the return on investment from social media. But Mark Morrell, intranet manager of BT, is prepared to hazard a guess.

"We know anecdotally it has saved a lot of time, and where we have beat competitors to a particular bid because we have been able to get information together quickly," he says. "For every £1 we spend on the intranet we believe we get £20 back."

Sneaker Net - Intranet at Nike

Mike Caldwell, Nike's global director of brand knowledge creation and sharing, credits the intranet with improving communication between Nike headquarters in Beaverton and the international offices, which account for more than 40 per cent of the company's $US6 billion in global footwear sales. That's not bad for a project that cost Nike just about $US3 million to develop, notes Caldwell, a runner himself who has cross-trained in a variety of roles ranging from sales to IT since joining the company in 1983.

Intranet Makeover, British Columbia Style

Tell us a little bit about the project and its history.

The BC Public Service, an organization of 30,000 employees across an immense (and gorgeous) province, relaunched its corporate intranet in April 2010. In just 50 working days from development to production, a tiny team built an interactive intranet to support employee communications and collaboration. This work was completed within the existing site budget using an open-source platform.

Obviously you had an intranet before. What worked well with the past version? What were the biggest problems?

@Work already had a robust user base and was the main communications vehicle for the BC Public Service. What worked well on the old site was the use of rich content to attract viewers: corporate announcements, employee profiles, executive updates, videos and audiocasts. Readers participated in weekly polls, and a comment board was most visited portion of the site.

Case Study on Yammer: "Mining the Value of Microsharing"

When implementing anything new in an organization, the question "What is the value?" invariably arises. When it came to demonstrating the value of Yammer, we took that question directly to our users. Like many organizations, our network growth on Yammer was grassroots and entirely word of mouth. We were nearing one thousand users when it came time to decide whether to keep Yammer going, or to pull the plug. We knew a big part of our recommendation to move forward had to show that the current population was deriving some kind of value. It was far too early to show any monetary value, but we were sure there was something there. So we asked our employees.

Top 10 Use Cases Enterprise Microsharing Will Help You Get Less Email

by Luis Suarez

I have always wondered when would articles like eMarketer’s "Social Not a Threat to E-Mail" grab that opportunity of providing a bit more of extensive details on the transition that email is currently going through at the moment moving away from being, consistently, that content repository that fits, and suits all sorts of interactions, to that messaging and notification system, a la newsfeed aggregator, that plenty of people prefer in order to keep up to date with social software tools updates. I bet we would all be much better off.

Enterprise microsharing will help you reduce your incoming emails (As well as those going out!) and move across most of those conversations away from your Inbox into open social spaces where everyone can contribute and participate.

Social Intranets - Part 1 - All Things Social

I have read a lot of talk over the past few weeks around Social Networking behind the corporate firewall. I have read pros and cons from both sides of the fence, and I understand where most people are coming from. But at the same time, I truly do not get how a business refuses to embrace new functionality for their employees to leverage professionally - just like email in the past. The pros definitely outweigh the cons (if there are any), IMO.
