Nordea People Book: A state-of-the-art intranet phone book - Guy van Leemput

Financial services group Nordea released their new intranet phone book in late 2011. This took their people search on the intranet to an impressive new level. The main goals were to make it faster to find colleagues and increase collaboration between employees across the organization. How did they achieve these common intranet objectives?

I spoke to Jill Sandström and Michael Rosager from Digital Communications in Nordea. They told me that more than 30,000 Nordea employees from 13 countries have access to People Book.

Why are intranets so ugly? - Ken Barnett

I believe there are several reasons why intranets do not look as clean and polished as business to consumer (B-to-C) websites.

First off they are thought of as behind the scenes. Since only employees are viewing your intranet it’s not as important that it has the slick look and feel that a commercial site has.

Second, the CMS that the intranet is built on is typically not easy to design for. It’s chosen and utilized primarily for it’s functionality and not it’s looks.

How confidential is an intranet design?

When I was developing snack products,  I was never allowed to talk about my work with people outside my company. Others might copy our ideas! But in intranets, things are really different! That is because only the content can be confidential, but not the design, navigation etc.

Whitepaper: Amazon's Corporate IT Deploys Corporate Intranet Running SharePoint 2010

Within Amazon, we often use the phrase "drinking our own champagne" to describe our practice of using our own products and services to prove them out under actual working conditions.

Amazon's Corporate IT recently wrapped up an important project and they have just documented the entire project in a new technical whitepaper.

Amazon's Corporate IT team deployed its corporate intranet to Amazon EC2 instances running Microsoft SharePoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008, all within a Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC).

This is a mission-critical internal corporate application that must deal with a large amount of very sensitive data.

With free Whitepaper...

Navigation is for losers! - J. Boye

The game is changing and there’s a major shift happening in the way we design websites. I’ve been in endless meetings with heated discussions over website or intranet navigation and information architecture. Should the navigation be aligned following departmental structures, product lines or copied from the competitors?

Once the navigation has been decided, the actual implementation often turns out to be complex and expensive. Subsequently, online analytics has unfortunately shown that the navigation is...

LL Bean makes old-model intranet shine with great content - Matt Wilson

How do you fix a messy intranet? For a lot of companies, the answer would be to buy the newest or shiniest intranet platform and let the information technology crew shoehorn the existing content into it.

LL Bean didn't do that.

"The reality is, we are an outdoor-apparel, product, customer-service, customer-oriented company," says Corporate Communications Manager Marnie Flynn, a speaker at Ragan Communications' 2011 Intranet Summit in November. "Most of our resources need to go to serving the customer."

Collaboration Personas - Perspective on User-Centric Collaboration

Over the last few years many organizations have used personas to help in the development of intranets and websites. The experience has perhaps been mixed, with some organizations gaining no benefit, and others finding that the personas have transformed the user experience.

Most of the published books and papers on persona development have focused on website use, and there is comparatively little written on their use for intranets. However, the common feature between web and intranet use is that the personas focus on the needs of an individual.

James Robertson’s London masterclass ‘Designing intranets that work’ by Mark Morrell

James Robertson will be running a masterclass 'Designing intranets that work' in London, UK, on 17th October.  For anyone like me who has seen James talking about intranets, he is a great performer and fantastic value.

As James says "The biggest complaint from staff in many organisations: I can't find anything on the intranet!" If intranets aren't easy to use, with great navigation and search, there's little point in having them. To ensure that new or redesigned intranets really are easy to use, we need to involve staff in the design process. Hear, hear!

Card sorting: online versus offline - Alex Manchester

Card sorting is a common technique within user-centred design (UCD) methodologies. It’s also an activity that can polarise opinions; people either believe in it, or think it’s a waste of time.

There are many articles and blog posts out there that measure the value of this UCD technique. This article focuses on a more specific aspect of the technique, which comes out of experience conducting a number of projects using card sorting — the use of offline and online card sorting methods.

Designing intranet structures – Designing your URLs (Part 3)

In all of the posts and articles I’ve read about intranets I’ve never heard much mention of URL design yet this can be a key approach in designing your intranet and will also permanently help your users in finding the content they need. If you’re worried that this might sound a little complicated don’t be.  The approach I’m proposing in this post is simple and low tech.

When discussing the system map in Part 2 I said that categories, genres and other aggregations should not be considered in order to k...

Social Intranet Design and Organizational Identity: Design for functionality and character

by cv harquail

In a social organization, the design of digital social tools like intranets should reflect the organizational features that define the organization. These design features, no matter how subtle, can ‘auto-communicate’ and make salient the characteristics that matter most, and help organizations stay authentic.

Especially in the digital workplace, our digital tools create an important shared context that ‘defines’ the organization.

Make SharePoint intranets beautiful - James Robertson

SharePoint is many things, but out of the box, beautiful isn’t one of them. The boxy design and shades of blue isn’t ugly per-se, but do little to inspire adoption and enthusiasm.

It used to be said that it was too hard to make SharePoint beautiful, but the following selection of examples show otherwise...

Navigation menu design with card sorting - @Wedge

Often used to discover the thoughts of users regarding ‘where’ they would like to find topics on the intranet, card sorting is a low-tech exercise that helps people influence the design of a site.

By collecting real-world information based on people’s expectations, rather than relying on the design or intranet team’s logic and wishes, a site can be built that is people-centred and meets users’ needs.

Learning from Apple – Fewer buttons on my intranet please… - Naveen Hiremath |

There is a lesson in here for every website designer. How many websites have we seen with Type 12 font buttons? An average website has at-least 30-40 places one can click on.

This is fine with a portal dishing out information; but what about the hundreds of portals built that are used to automate business processes in companies.
