Why SharePoint 2010 needs to have a good mobile user experience « Mark Morrell Intranet Pioneer

Why is SharePoint 2010 so widely used? I believe it is because it offers for the first time one technical solution that meets many business needs rather than just one.

If you want to improve knowledge sharing you will have many tools to consider. Again if you need to manage your documents you will have a wide choice of vendors. But if your business has more than one need or can see how solving one will create other requirements then a solution like SharePoint 2010 comes become more attractive to consider.

What if your organisation needs employees to use your intranet while away from their place of work? There are huge savings in office costs and increases in productivity if employees can use the intranet to help them with their work while they are mobile.

The Digital Workplace: How technology is liberating work by Mark Morrell, Intranet Pioneer

Many of you who follow my blog will know of my interest in the digital workplace. From my first-hand experience transforming BT’s digital workplace and involvement with other organisations it is a very exciting area to work in. So it was great to hear about this book!

Paul Miller’s book ‘The Digital Workplace: How technology is liberating work’ is an absolute must read for anyone interested in finding out how technology is changing the way we work for everyone on the planet.

The way Paul Miller writes it from his own experiences and view of life – working and personal – makes it compelling to read. The examples Paul uses are ones we can all relate too and are real, not made up to fit a theoretical scenario.

Is there a career path from intranets to digital workplaces? « Mark Morrell Intranet Pioneer

I have written before about career paths and future job opportunities for intranet practitioners. I don’t believe the only option is to become intranet consultants like I chose to do after leaving as BT’s intranet manager. If you want to move to another organisation then IntraTeam’s job vacancies in LinkedIn is a good place to start looking.

This post is about career development and progression within your own organisation. It’s about taking advantage by the creation of the digital workplace to extend your experience and skills into wider and more strategic areas of your business. I also owe this post to a certain intranet professional (yes, you know who you are!) who I promised this to sometime ago.....

What is a digital workplace? « Mark Morrell Intranet Pioneer

Last week at the IntraTeam event in Copenhagen (Twitter #IEC12) there were many discussions about the digital workplace and what exactly is a digital workplace.

I thought it would be good to start a debate on what we mean when we say the digital workplace. Many intranet professionals want to find out more about the digital workplace.

It will help me and other intranet professionals if you can comment to agree, disagree, amend, etc, to create a shared understanding on the digital workplace.

Here is my view for you to consider and comment upon. I define the digital workplace as “Work is what you do, not where you go to.”......read more.

Have the right SharePoint 2010 governance « Mark Morrell Intranet Pioneer

Based on my experience and knowledge gained when I was the BT Intranet manager and helping other organisations implement many SharePoint 2010 features I can help you too using my checklist.

SharePoint 2010 may be “the best sweetie shop in town” for all its range of features for people to use but the need for effective governance raises for intranet professionals a different set of challenges. The strategy for SharePoint 2010 governance has to be very different to other publishing or collaborative tools.

I believe there are three approaches which can give your organisation the right governance it needs with SharePoint 2010. You don’t have to use just one. You can combine some of each to find the right blend for your organisation.

Stopping knowledge leaving with the person - Mark Morrell

It is a common problem as I know from personal experience. An organisation will closely track all the physical assets that you hold – computer, phone, car, etc, – and want them returned before you leave.

But your digital assets and your intellectual assets are rarely managed so the knowledge about how your work is carried out – processes, priorities, etc. – and the right contacts are lost to your successor (if your replacement has not been recruited), your manager and other people you work with.

3 steps to making it easier for top performers to share knowledge « Mark Morrell intranet pioneer

How do I engage employees and improve collaboration? is a question I have been addressing in my posts
Make a newbie welcome and more engaged, Integrating and engaging a newbie, How an engaged newbie can become a top performer and A top performer’s career development.

There isn’t one standard way to mentoring. From my experience as a mentor and running a mentoring programme, it is the personalities of the mentor and mentee (protegé), the needs of the mentee and the ways and frequency of contact between them which can create a dynamic, enriching and long relationship or quickly fizzle out to nothing.

Intranets are still very much alive! « Mark Morrell intranet pioneer

I read with interest the blog posts by Tony Byrne ‘Death of the Intranet‘ and by Martin White ‘Death of the Intranet: ‘The Times They are a-changin’‘. They are both interesting posts with provocative titles to catch the attention. It has caused some great discussions about intranets which is great. The biggest and most negative reaction I found has been from intranet practitioners who feel it is an over reaction and not how they see things.

Having recently been an intranet practitioner as the BT Intranet manager before becoming a consultant, I can see the subject from both points of view.

Redefining productivity in the Digital Workplace by Mark Morrell

The way people do their work is shifting from a physical workplace to a digital workplace.  This gives organisations an enormous opportunity to change their business model and create competitive advantage by deciding early how to take advantage of the digital workplace.

From my own experiences and knowledge I can see the risks if organisations delay and or make the wrong decisions.  I have blogged about this in the past and how it affects engaged people are in their organisation, how effective collaboration will be and whether tools like SharePoint 2010 will help.

Intranet-Digital Workplace Trends Update - NetJMC

We are currently working on analysis of the data provided by over 450 organizations around the world in this year’s Intranet-Digital Workplace Trends survey. We’ll provide more highlights later. “Digital Workplace Trends 2012” will be published mid-November, rather than the initial date of end October. This is because the survey actually closed 2 weeks later than planned, at the request of a number of participants.

When we see the amount of responses to the open questions, it’s understandable that people wanted some extra days! There were 246 responses to the open text question: “Please describe briefly a business benefit your intranet or digital workplace has brought to your organization”. It took 23 A4 pages to print! Fascinating reading!

Some interesting findings so far...

How do I engage employees and improve collaboration? « Mark Morrell intranet pioneer

It’s the type of question I am hearing more frequently. It’s being asked by intranet people, CIOs, senior business operations managers and even a few CEOs.  It’s important that it is answered clearly and fully. The alternative of ignoring it is to risk a repeat of what happened to knowledge management in the late 1990s when it was ‘the thing’ to talk about and be seen to be doing but sadly, in many cases, never able to meet its full potential helping businesses.

I don’t claim to know all the answers and there is more than one way to address this question. In fact it is a deeper and complex subject which needs covering for this question to be answered fully.

The Digital Workplace – the enabling environment for information work - Stephan Schillerwein

Today, information-related work constitutes the number one activity for any organization - both from a quantitative as well as from a qualitative perspective. And despite decades of investment in information technology, information and information work is still badly managed and a source of unparalleled waste in employee productivity.

This situation serves as the basis for an upcoming whitepaper about the "Digital Workplace" which I have been working on. It is to be published at the end of this month. While in layout and production, I want to share some previews into the content of the report.
