What is the right governance model for a digital workplace? « Mark Morrell Intranet Pioneer

Thank you to everyone who read my last post ‘What is a digital workplace?‘ and contributed to a great discussion helping to define it. Staying with the digital workplace theme I want to show you the views given in my workshop at IntraTeam 2012 event ‘How to build the right governance model for the digital workplace‘ which produced some great responses.

The workshop covered four areas needed for the right level of governance: Ownership, Consistency, Standards, and Integrity.

Read about the outcome and add your views to the discussion.....

Have the right SharePoint 2010 governance « Mark Morrell Intranet Pioneer

Based on my experience and knowledge gained when I was the BT Intranet manager and helping other organisations implement many SharePoint 2010 features I can help you too using my checklist.

SharePoint 2010 may be “the best sweetie shop in town” for all its range of features for people to use but the need for effective governance raises for intranet professionals a different set of challenges. The strategy for SharePoint 2010 governance has to be very different to other publishing or collaborative tools.

I believe there are three approaches which can give your organisation the right governance it needs with SharePoint 2010. You don’t have to use just one. You can combine some of each to find the right blend for your organisation.

Digital workplace - points to cover - NetJMC

This diagram is work in progress with three of my clients who have asked me to help them evolve their “intranet+collaboration+social” online environments to a more coherent digital workplace. The slide has also evolved gradually thanks to input from workshops in Washington DC and Stockholm with participants in organizations with different cultures, and a range of experience from a few “well on the way” to most “just starting” the digital workplace journey.

I’ll be talking on my blog about these “building blocks” over the next few weeks, but wanted to already publish the slide, hopefully to get some feedback.

Intranet Governance 2012 - @TobyWard

Who should own the intranet? Communications? IT? HR? All of them? You may be shocked to learn that many companies don’t know the answer; in fact, many organizations can’t clearly answer with any confidence whom is the present intranet owner.

Gone are the days where a single IT geek creates an intranet on a server under his desk, and manages the whole kit-and-kaboodle (at least in a real business environment that doesn’t feature the cast of Dilbert). Also in retreat, facing extinction (where budget permits) is the ‘wild west’ intranet: anyone can do whatever they want, and they do.

Why BT chose SharePoint 2010 « Mark Morrell intranet pioneer

When you have one of the best intranets globally – don’t take my word for it, ask the Intranet Benchmarking Forum who independently assessed it – why would you decide to make the biggest change to your intranet since it was created over 15 years ago?

Simply communicate have published a great article I have written which explains why BT decided on SharePoint 2010 and how it went about implementing it successfully while I was the BT Intranet manager.

Common intranet questions, unique solutions - Stephen Byrne

Intranet professionals often ask questions of their peers in the hope that the experience of others can provide a starting point for planning and inspiration.

Common questions

For those new to intranets there is certainly immediate value in exploring the most valuable core intranet tools such as great people directories, easy to find support services like HR, and a search function that returns useful results. However, answers to other common questions can be more challenging to implement.

Many of the common questions encountered include:

What is the best governance model?
Who should own the intranet?
How much will an intranet cost?
What is the best technology to use?
Which technology tools should we deploy?

3 ways to bring coherence to the intranet ecosystem- @NetJMC

The global intranet manager should govern the intranet, not manage it. The word “governance” is often used to cover both, but we should in fact make a distinction:

  • Governance is a steering framework that defines strategic goals, decision-making (who and how), accountability, and procedures for reconciling differences.

  • Management, on the other hand, refers to how the governance decisions and principles are put into practice. For example: the definition of guidelines and rules, life-cycle steps, processes, editorial policies, standardization, and so on.

Intranet managers responsible for large intranet eco-systems should focus on governing, not managing. Their vocation should be to help bring meaning and relevance for people using these systems.

81 Intranet Governance Questions to Ask Yourself - Gordon Ross

Intranet governance, especially social intranet governance, is tough. We believe intranet governance matters and that it is a crucial factor in the success or failure of an intranet implementation.

We help our ThoughtFarmer clients in their intranet roll-outs by doing a review of some basic governance topics, providing links to some great resources from folks like Martin White, James Robertson, Maish Nichani, and Toby Ward, and by asking a lot of questions.

I’ve compiled some of the big questions that we find lead to important discussions when it comes to intranet governance and management. While long, it’s by no means an exhaustive list — as always, we appreciate hearing what questions you’ve found helpful in making your own intranet decision-making process that much better.

Re-prioritise your intranet’s home page « Interact Intranet is Intelligent Intranet Software

Re-prioritise your intranet’s home page

Prime real estate, is how we describe the intranet’s home page, isn’t it? We’re careful what goes on it, although over the years perhaps it has bloated to include too many links and ‘must have’ widgets solely to satisfy stakeholders, rather than the audience.

So how often do you review your home page and assess its impact and value?

In total, across all the research, our recommendations for portal design are now based on 67 case studies of intranet portals.

Intranet governance 101 – the vision - Kilobox Communiqué (@Wedge)

Governance’ is such a big word, it almost loses its meaning when we start talking about intranet governance.

There are strategic experts out there and resources to rely on when considering how your intranet is governed and managed, but allow me to share some tactical ideas to help intranet managers get to grips with governance in a practical sense.

Let’s start with the vision.

Now don’t roll your eyes; I’m not talking about the mission and values of your intranet

15 indicators of social business transformation

As organizations begin to show signs of “social business” behaviors, they will begin to experience different levels of cultural change relating to the people in the organization, as well as its processes and technology.

The following are 15 indicators of social business transformation. It’s important to realize that while some of these behaviors are dependent on each other, they are distinct and not necessarily in chronological order.

“Functional communities” – intranet drivers in global organizations - @NetJMC

In less than 24 hours I had great feedback to my definitions of groups regarding collaboration. Once again, the internet has accelerated my work! Clearly, I need to adjust and enlarge my definition of “community of practice”. If you did not follow the conversation, you can see it here in the comments. Thanks very much to Peter, Willem, Graham and Martin.

Governance for collaboration: think operational not organizational - NetJMC

Governance is getting harder. It was fairly easy when we were dealing with structured information, documents and content management systems. Today things are different.

Today we’re dealing with people!

We’re working with groups of people, with different purposes, different types of leadership and above all different dynamics and ways of working.

I’ve defined different types of groups I’ve experienced inside enterprises. This is work in progress, so feel free to jump in. Click on the image to read the...

Elements of an Effective Social Media Policy - Steve Bruce via HR Daily Advisor

Creating a policy about blogging and social networking offers a chance to minimize the risks for employers, says attorney Thomas Deer. It makes employees aware of their employers’ position on the use of social media, and it provides a reference point if it is necessary to take adverse action against someone for their online activity.

When preparing policies to deal with blogging, employers should be cautious about not going “too far,” Deer says. The NLRA can be a tripwire for the unwary. For example, a policy prohibiting employees from saying “anything negative” about their employer would clearly run afoul of the NLRB since this type of discussion is at the core of the right to form unions or engage in concerted activity.
