Social media policies & guidelines a must for responsible empowerment - Cathy McKnight

Every enterprise has some sort of social media touching it. Whether it is an officially sanctioned Facebook Fan page, or employees Tweeting on the latest company gossip, social media is being used by employees (and the public).

It is essential that companies establish clear guidelines and policies, enabling employees, contractors and clients alike to understand the responsibilities associated with social media offers.

Having the proper policies and guidelines in place will help curtail common issues associated with social media implementation in corporate environments. Issues such as:

* The release of confidential corporate information
* Sharing of proprietary Intellectual Property
* Effect on corporate reputation
* Liability
* Employee time/productivity

Social intranet governance - Toby Ward

I’m quite certain that no one has outstripped by voracious capacity to write about intranet governance, but at the risk of repeating myself, here’s another recommendation: social intranets need governance too.

Duh.

Actually, if you already have a governance model in place, and a social media policy, then your work is likely done. If you are one of these trail blazer organizations (and those intranets with both a governance model and social media policy are part of a significant minority), then pat yourself on the back.

About:

  • Governance model
  • Social intranet governance
  • Employee generated content

How to set a social networking policy for your employees

Lately, it seems that just about everyone and everything has a Facebook page, Twitter account or blog. Employees who are responsible for updating or managing those social media channels have likely been instructed on what can and can’t be posted.

Although the FTC “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising" are explicit about transparency, there are still a lot of questions that many employees have about what is and is not acceptable. Taking Constitutional Law out of the mix, let’s focus on the company or organizational policy.

Here are a set of rules that organizations should consider implementing to ensure that both the organization and the employee understand how to engage online.

Planting governance seeds - Jane McConnell

I ran a workshop at the J.Boye Philadelphia conference this morning: "Using governance to future-proof the intranet."

My underlying key message is this: Intranets evolve. They are a process, not a project. Therefore you need to plant "governance seeds" throughout the organization. They will grow and develop as the organization evolves. They will help build a new attitude towards the intranet. They will bring more impact than a governance document!

Position descriptions for intranet managers - Catherine Grenfell

Organisations nowadays are complex, diverse and everchanging. Within this working environment intranet managers need to define their place in the organisation.

One way to help establish where the intranet manager fits in an organisation is a position description. Position descriptions describe the key or major duties and responsibilities of the position.

The intranet manager may inherit a position description with the role or more often intranet managers need to create both the role and a position description.

Measuring the effectiveness of intranet teams » Step Two Designs, Catherine Grenfell

Structuring three types of content » Step Two Designs, James Robertson

The fundamental goal of developing a new structure for an intranet is to produce something that works well for staff. As discussed in the earlier article Escaping the organisation chart on your intranet, this often means getting away from a navigation structure that mirrors content ownership.

Experience has shown that staff will struggle to find information if they have to know who owns the content first.
