This is precisely what an interesting experiment at global consulting firm Capgemini is revealing. Many of the company’s 110,000 people are based on site at client locations and it is here that ‘real-world’ challenges must be addressed. The IT consultants in particular, who form about half of the workforce, are in an environment where the information they use goes out of date very quickly.

I’ve microblogged regularly in my own company’s intranet platform and found it particularly useful to help me find people, recent information, or discuss and debate issues with my peers across the organization.

I stay on top of the current news across the company—beyond just the official news sources—by peeking into my activity stream. Unlike what you might see on public personal social networking sites, most of the discussions revolve around projects, customers, enterprise issues, glocal events, or requests for assistance.

While there are casual conversations as well, what you really find are work-focused conversations you might hear in any company—just taken to a global, location-independent, and online level.

Socialtext is fueling corporate collaboration one tweet at a time.

Most company intranets are little better than corporate newsletters: static, lifeless, boring. "You know what the most visited corporate intranet page is?" asks Eugene Lee, CEO of Socialtext. "The cafeteria lunch menu."

Socialtext, a nine-year-old company based in Palo Alto, California, aims to make the corporate intranet sexy again. In the process it is changing the way silo-bound corporate citizens collaborate.

Transparent Office: Companies aren't communities - Michael Idinopulos

Of course company life has a community aspect, but a lot of social software folks seem to forget that there's a lot more to a company than community. They treat companies as if they were consumer communities or forums that all just happen to have their paychecks signed by the same person.

Why does the difference matter? The answer is in the numbers. Online communities and forums typically attract very small audiences relative to the total target population: Less than 1% adoption is typical, and 5% adoption would be a grand-slam. That's fine for the consumer web, but those numbers inside the enterprise aren't exactly a ringing endorsement.

The Heterogeneous Intranet - @DigitalJonathan

A few weeks ago, Yammer took hold in my organisation. From a standing start 18 months ago with just me, we gained tens of users in 2 weeks at the beginning of the year and growing quickly. (Aside: those first few years of Yammer were rather boring for me.

It really was an anti-social media site).

As an intranet professional, this grow in use is both exciting and alarming. On the positive side, it clearly demonstrates a business need and desire for more informal internal communication and collaboration channels. Our employees have embraced Yammer which bodes well as intranets continue to evolve their social functionality.

Getting To Know Your Firm Through Micro-Blogging - Nick Carrier

One of the questions I always get from the anti enterprise 2.0 crowd is, “Seriously, isn’t micro-blogging* a gigantic waste of time?” The problem in responding is that the person already has a strong opinion, so I can’t just defend micro-blogging. If I did, people would tune me out as soon as I got to “it’s a real time information network that….” To combat this, I ask one of three questions.

The ongoing struggles to balance IT security and staff empowerment

Governments around the world are struggling to manage the dual challenges of maintaining IT security while also enabling their staff to do their jobs in a digital world.

The Australian government has endorsed social media engagement by staff in its Open Government Declaration, stating that;

Agencies are to reduce barriers to online engagement, undertake social networking, crowd sourcing and online collaboration projects and support online engagement by employees, in accordance with the Australian Public Service Commission Guidelines.

Meeting this remains a challenge in many agencies. It takes time to assess services, mitigate risks, adjust processes and policies and train staff.

Sungard harnesses Yammer to leverage employee creativity

Sungard thought about jumping right on and they figured 3 main things: 1. people were talking but Sungard wasn’t part of the conversations 2. competitors were (just) ahead of Sungard 3. users were in there too! So Sungard jumped in the water and created accounts on all platforms. But how could Social Media be used as a way to harness the power of conversations?

Social Media gives Sungard the ability to build on the existing community work already started at Sungard years before that. They saw that big brand advertising was far less meaningful than peer to peer communications and this is why Social Media is useful to them.

Get a load of this. A survey released this week revealed the latest affliction to hit white-collar workers. It’s called ‘information rage’, and almost one in two Aussie employees is affected by it. Overwhelmed by the torrent of data flooding corporate workplaces, many are on the verge of breaking point.

Only 40 per cent of emails are deemed to be of value. The others are a waste of time. A classic offender is the old “cc”. This is when people get copied into a never-ending thread of electronic notifications, with very few of these pertinent to the work of the recipients.

How Yammer Won Over 80% of the Fortune 500

Yammer is the enterprise social network that launched in September 2008. Initially a Twitter clone for the corporate world, the startup has since graduated from microblogging to offer a more Facebook (Facebook)-like platform for businesses.

Along the way, Yammer has faced stiff competition from dozens of replica services. Still, it has managed to secure $15 million in Series A and B funding rounds to tackle the internal social media needs of its enterprise clientele.

Today, we know Yammer as the opposite of a flash-in-the-pan service, sitting pretty with more than 90,000 customer companies and organizations — amounting to 1 million users in 135 countries using its information network. In an interview with Mashable, Founder and CEO David Sacks explains how Yammer’s attracted a client base that includes more than 80% of the Fortune 500.
