How To Test Your Social Intranet's Usability - Noodle blog

One important factor in your social intranet’s success is its usability: how easy it is to use and navigate, how quickly users find what they need, whether it’s intuitive — if users can figure out how things work without needing formal training or a thick how-to manual — and how much fun it is to use.

After all, if your intranet isn’t easy and fun to use, then how do you expect your staff to use it?

The question that’s always on an intranet manager’s mind is: How do I know how usable our intranet is? Traditional Ways of Assessing Usability

In this article are some of the traditional ways of measuring an intranet’s usability, and why they aren’t always very accurate, useful or feasible...

Social intranet increases collaboration - Tony Wanless

As business increasingly becomes either knowledge-or service-based, constant communication is necessary for employees to collaborate. Social platforms, or intranets, have emerged as the leading technology for information sharing at companies. Social intranets apply the cross-communication capability familiar to us from Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter to internal communication and collaboration platforms.

"Social intranets encourage wide authorship and involvement among workers," says Chris McGrath, co-founder and vice-president, sales and marketing, for ThoughtFarmer, a social intranet supplier.

The Social Intranet Infographic: 10 Steps to a Social Intranet - Intranet Blog

Truth be told, a successful social intranet is remarkably similar to an intranet. Not unlike like the high-performance sports car to the family car, a high-performance social intranet resembles the corporate, family intranet at first glance… but only when it’s not performing to expectations.

A flourishing social intranet needs many of the requisites of a regular, run-of-the-mill intranet: well-defined governance and process(es), highly engaged people, and highly functional technology.

But the devil is in...

Has your intranet seen better days?

It seems there is one thing about intranets that sets them apart; they are not very social.

Hardly surprising, as many intranets grew up long before web 2.0 created the environment that allowed the likes of Facebook and Twitter to flourish.

“A lot of intranets deployed are a little long in the tooth these days,” said Michael Vizard on IT Business Edge. “In fact, not only does there tend to be a lot of dormant intranets, many of them are little more than dormant repositories for documents that most employees rarely use.”

The Running Librarian: 10 things that make an intranet critical and social

What is it that makes an intranet social and critical? Study proves internal social media engages employees - Shel Holtz

Evidence continues to mount that social intranets have the potential to produce big results for organizations. The ongoing McKinsey & Company study points to outcomes ranging from increased market share to reduced time to market, along with a host of other positive results. Studies from MIT and Aberdeen Group show productivity gains among employees using social intranets.

Yet a recent study from IABC and Prescient Digital Media suggests that 39 percent of companies don't have any social components on their intranets (the number is as high as 49 percent in other research), and a substantial number of those that do have only one (like a wiki or a blog).

Worse, only 28 percent of employees—including executives—rate their overall satisfaction with the social dimensions of their intranets as good or very good.

The Digital Workplace: How Sociable is Your Intranet? - Martin White

The language we use defines our national identity and culture. In the UK most of the people living in Wales can speak English but under the 1993 Welsh Language Act all public-sector websites that contain information relevant to Wales have to be in English and Welsh. Certainly English is a very useful default language, and it is fairly easy to work with around 850 words. The other 1 million are just there to confuse everyone, including many native speakers.

In the USA if you are asked to slate a meeting you know that you will need to set a date and perhaps the attendees and agenda. In the UK if you asked me to slate a meeting I’d ask you which meeting you wanted me to criticize.

Intranet 2.0 and The Social Intranet - Intranet Blog

Intranet 2.0 is a label used loosely to describe the application and adoption of Web 2.0 or social media technology behind the corporate firewall. In short, it’s Web 2.0 but on the corporate intranet. The intranet 2.0 label has largely faded to black, and has been replaced by the more fashionable label, the social intranet. However, there are clear distinctions between the two.

The original intranet, intranet 1.0, typically began as nothing more than a bare bones website on someone’s desktop computer, usually in IT or corporate communications. The first version of this intranet was nothing more than a welcome page, perhaps a name and a phone number, and a simple welcome message.

10 things that make an intranet social and critical - Socialwrks

Despite all the talk and the fact many organisations understand that the locked down intranet (1.0) of old wont do, I thought there is still much debate about what its new iteration (the social intranet) is and why it is important.

So I thought I would try and collect some answers, if only for my own purposes of clarity. In essence this is a distillation of my experiences and these are my views although I did get several insights from a really excellent conversation held on the topic via Twitter which did provide lots of food for thought (see my favourite tweet further down).

I would love to hear your thoughts in a comment :)

How Arla made their intranet more social - J. Boye

‘Social’ was a major buzzword for intranets in 2011. As is often the case, it is far from easy for intranet professionals to figure out what the concept behind the buzzword means for the business and how to back it up with a business case. However, it is clear that many managers and employees now expect social, so where and how to start?

Danish dairy company Arla Foods, took the first small but important step in the direction of social, when they introduced a simplethumbs up or down rating feature on in...

Who Owns the Intranet? - Joel's SharePoint Land

In a world of Intranet turf battles, the easy answer is… well, uh… IT, HR, Corp Communication, Marketing, and so on, but in this social world isn't it really the end user should own its destiny?

I reference an article from 2001 "Our intranet doesn't need an owner. It belongs to all of us -- and to none of us.

Fortunately, that freewheeling approach is picking up surprising support from managers, consultants, and intranet users." Amazing that 11 years later, we are still trying to move in that direction.

Social Business would dictate that it isn't owned by any department if the platform is governed and setup properly.

The personalization and needs of all should be surfaced in a way that it serves the user. Join in the poll. I've created a poll to see who you think owns the Intranet. I'll replace your results with this best guess.

Why Adoption Rates Are Low and How to Fix It

Intranet social media can be one of the most powerful tools for internal communication. Unfortunately, the adoption rate of social media within corporations is dismally low.

Long story short, employees simply rarely take up internal social media. In fact, 72% of employees use intranet social media networks less than once a month. In comparison, most will use Facebook several times a day.

Why is that?

Why social collaboration is important for your intranet, by Joshua David

“Over the past couple of years intranets have gone through a number of wonderful evolutions – everything from providing on-demand tools to creating more personalized experiences for their employees. And today with the rise of mobile devices and social media, many are looking to intranets for a way to take a more active role in the conversations going on in the company.

This can be accomplished by integrating social strategies into your existing intranet framework, and promoting social collaboration...

Could this be the start of a social intranet? (Intranet diary)

It's 5 o'clock on Friday afternoon, the day after our office Christmas party and I'm very much looking forward to going home. Just as I'm packing my things away I'm approached by one of the comms team...

"The Director General is going on the road next week and wants to be able to tweet what she's doing and display it on the intranet," he demands.

"I want to go home and if she waits another few months for our Twitter policy to be approved then perhaps I can do something," I think to myself.

Lackluster social intranet? 3 things you're (probably) not doing

For years, employees have been subjected to the "Godspeed" method of their employers introducing new communication technologies to the workplace. Here's how it works:

The IT department configures the new technology, subjecting it to rigorous testing to ensure that the bits get to where they're supposed to go and that the tool works they way it's supposed to without interfering with other systems. Once they're sure the technology works right, they issue the following instructions to the workforce: "Godspeed."

From social intranets to collaboration ecosystems - Forbes

Social intranet is a hot topic. With the rise of social software, the next step to the enterprise social nirvana is the intranet. Hopefully, nobody is considering Facebook as a model anymore (like in “our new intranet will be like Facebook“), but there is still some confusion in what “social” stands for in the enterprise.

So first of all, let’s try to find the correct definition for “ social intranet“. Wikipedia is providing the following definition: “An intranet is a...
