How to use a social intranet to unite a sales team

Setting up a structure in an intranet can be a tricky business. Many organisations follow the organisation tree and decide to structure sites, folders, etc based on the established hierarchy of the company.

Others let it grow organically. In most cases the results of the former approach is that it turns into a data coffin because the only people who think along the lines of the org chart is the HR department.

The latter approach, while encouraging adoption, just turns into a mess where no-one can find anything. Instead of being a functioning society of information it turns into little pockets of activity which no-one outside of the people using it a) know even exists b) would know where to go if it did exist.

Intranet Management: Shaping the Internal Customer Experience - Martin White (@intranetfocus)

Good intranet managers are able to slice and dice their customers in many ways. Thanks to all the work they have done with personas, they may even have pictures of them up on the wall of their office, or more likely, desk divider. Each day they will be worrying about the user experience of these customers, and it’s difficult to tell them that their customers are actually not that concerned by the user experience.

These customers are captive and clever. They come to work each day knowing every twist and turn of the corporate intranet, together with a list of quick dial numbers they can use when they need information urgently and cannot find it. Even if they are performing multiple tasks and multiple roles I suspect that these customers will only be using a small percentage, may be only 0.5%, of the pages on the intranet. Don’t be too depressed — that is still a lot of pages in most companies.

Google, LinkedIn, Apple, Microsoft…..The new intranet providers? - Martin White

There are a lot of intranets around the world, though no-one is quite sure how many.  Most of the news about intranets is generated by larger organisations and I was interested in the recent analysis from Andrew Wright that challenged the view of the Nielsen Norman Group that smaller companies have better intranets.

There have been a number of posts on various LinkedIn groups recently by people working ...

Poll reveals what employees want most on an intranet

Of about 280 respondents in a recent LinkedIn poll, the largest group—more than one-third—said the improvement they'd most like to see to their intranets is greater interactivity and collaboration. The second-largest group—a little more than one-fourth—said they want information on their intranets to be easier to find.

"The world has become so much more interactive and participatory, so it makes sense that employees demand the same from their intranets," says William Amurgis, director of internal communications at American Electric Power. "We manage our intranet with the understanding that consumer technology drives employee expectations at work."

Intranet Upgrade: Picking the right agency - Intranetizen

There comes a time when an intranet manager is faced with an intranet upgrade. Your intranet isn’t fit for purpose and the majority of your time is spent fixing things rather than developing and perfecting areas within. Does the thought of an upgrade excite you? Or make you break out in a fit of cold sweats? No matter what the reaction, an intranet upgrade is a big project that requires the right team internally and externally.

In a series of upcoming Intranetizen posts we will be looking at the different steps in achieving a successful intranet upgrade. This first post details the process behind securing an agency that understands your business and your project’s objectives.

How to build a successful intranet - William Amurgis

Is your organization’s intranet an unqualified success?

If so, congratulations – you’re likely in the minority. For the rest of us, we may often see glimpses of success, but continue to confront obstacles, or take missteps, or simply lose our way.

I’ve worked on intranets since before the term was even coined (around 1995), and I’ve made plenty of mistakes. However, I’ve also stumbled into a few triumphs, and learned some important lessons along the way.

To me, these are the 10 fundamental activities that lead to a successful intranet...

Using your intranet to increase workplace happiness - Chris Radcliffe

Many executives understand that their corporate intranet is an important vehicle for driving higher levels of employee engagement. Although sadly, many intranets today are doing the reverse and are not making a positive impact on workplace happiness! When intranets are poorly designed, organically mismanaged or left to decay without the required love and support, they can have a detrimental impact on an organization. It takes a special combination of thinking outside the box — beyond the world of features and functionality and into the complex world of what makes people tick.

Intranets, and for that matter successful corporate cultures that drive stronger levels of employee engagement, generally have...

Leadership involvement is vital to social intranet success -

Evidence continues to mount that social intranets have the potential to produce big results for organizations. The ongoing McKinsey & Company study points to outcomes ranging from increased market share to reduced time to market, along with a host of other positive results.

Studies from MIT and Aberdeen Group show productivity gains among employees using social intranets. Yet a recent study from IABC an...

The intranet vs. The digital workplace « Martin Risgaard

In November I was in Stockholm for Intranätdagarna 2011:2 (The Intranet Days 2011:2) and during my two-day visit to the Swedish capital, I had the pleasure of talking to Paul Miller from Intranet Benchmarking Forum. Among other things we spent some time talking about the proclaimed death of intranets which I believe is greatly exaggerated.

Since then I have started at my third intranet related job at a new company and this has given me an opportunity to get a closer look behind the scenes of an intranet...

What do intranet teams need to know about the cloud? - James Robertson

“The cloud” is ever-present these days, backed by a huge marketing push from multiple vendors, including Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Apple. Backed by immense data centres located in (often) rural locations, “the cloud” will apparently transform our lives.

While it’s still early days for the cloud, it’s clear that it will ultimately have a big impact on the way we manage our information as consumers. It will also make substantial inroads into the enterprise space.

So with executives and IT alike talking about “the cloud”, what does the intranet team need to know?

1. The cloud means many things

With the cloud still heading up the Gartner hype curve, the marketers have started to apply “the cloud” label to many things, including what used to be called software-as-a-service (SaaS). These days, the cloud encompasses...

Declining trust defines new role for intranets - Sharon O'Dea

The 2012 Edelman Trust Barometer, published last week, finds a deepening sense of distrust in governments, businesses and institutions. The annual global study, which questioned 30,000 people in 25 countries, reveals a dramatic shift in the value people place in information sources – which, in turn, has some interesting implications for communicators and intranet managers.

Across the globe, blame for the financial and political chaos of 2011 landed at the doorstep of government, as trust in that institution fell nine points to 43 per cent. In seventeen of the 25 countries surveyed, government is now trusted by less than half to do what is right. In twelve, it trails business, media and non-governmental organizations as the least trusted institution.

Intranet 2012 predictions - Intranetizen

The second week back in the office after the Christmas and New Year break is the oddest time, the holiday break feels very distant already. It’s a great time to propose ideas, plan out and prepare yourself for the intranet year ahead. So, what do we think 2012 has in store?

Here’s the intranetizen 2012 prediction list:

  • Austerity measures and the Olympics will drive companies to enable more home working

The intranet as a ‘digital workplace’ will become a step more real and more people will be encouraged to stay home and use the intranet to share documents and collaborate.

  • SharePoint maintains position, but 2012 is the year of the augmented social

And a few more...

Intranets: global and local - James Robertson

Not all staff needs are the same. Staff in different parts of the organisation, located in different areas and doing different jobs will have quite distinct needs.

In a globe-spanning manufacturing business, these differences are very obvious: individual countries sell different products; the sales division operates very differently from product development; and field engineers are not office-based designers.

5 Ways to Engage Employees with Your Intranet - Christopher Swan

The company intranet is kind of like the middle child in a family. We care about it, but its siblings usually get more attention. In this scenario, the siblings are external websites and social media channels. Websites always seem to get the makeover and the budget allocations when push comes to shove. Since social media is the last born, it’s the pride and joy of the company and leaders are focusing on this fun and energizing medium.

What many companies and leaders do not understand is that the intranet connects employees with the company and is an important engagement tool. Engagement equals happy employees, less turnover, increased innovation and savings on the bottom line. These things matter.

Social Intranets & digital natives - Beantin

One particular statistic from the Swedish internet use report for 2011 was how everyone in Sweden in the 16-25 age group uses social media.

For a fair while we’ve been discussing the expectations of young employees in the workplace, but this statistic is about as big as a wake-up call as an organisation can get.

It’s time for companies to stop slacking, pull their intranet socks up and get social.

The Changing Role of Internal Communications - Sam Marshall

Last week I was invited to join Melcrum’s Social Media group to discuss how the growth of social media impacts the function of internal communications. It was a very lively debate and what follows is my take on the topic, updated based on what I learned that day (I was actually billed to do a ‘download’ but the irony of a one-way presentation on social media wasn’t lost on me, especially given the level of knowledge in the room so we had an open discussion instead).

Clearly the shift is away from internal communications as content creators and owners and more towards comms as facilitators
